Key Points

  • The study shows that brain stem auditory evoked potentials effectively assess infants with congenital atresia.
  • Clinical cases demonstrate the methodology for evaluating auditory responses in newborns and older infants.
  • This approach highlights the importance of immediate medical services to manage and support auditory malformations.
  • Assessment techniques can facilitate appropriate habilitative services for affected infants and their families.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the value of the brain stem auditory evoked response in the definitive assessment of newborn and older infants with congenital malformations of the auditory system. Clinical cases selected illustrate the methodology required in the evaluation, and demonstrate how the technique can facilitate immediate and appropriate medical and habilitative services.
