The initial use of power tongs for casing connections has evolved into a more advanced method, involving the tie-in of a CRT (casing running tool) to the top drive in parallel to the rig's operating system to automate the operation. In integrated casing running, the common contributors to flat times have been identified in aligning the CRT tool into the joint, connection makeup, and intermittent filling up of the casing string with drilling fluid. The connection times from slips to slips, can vary from different factors such as the driller’s expertise, visibility of the CRT tool position, and the effectiveness of crew communication. Nabors Drilling Solutions recognized the areas where improvements were attainable through automation and implemented an engineered solution comprised of mechanical and software enhancements. This innovative approach delivered consistent casing connection times while eliminating the human error that can lead to misapplied torque and the risk of joint damage or cross-threading incidents. A field test conducted in West Texas demonstrated a 67% reduction in the time required for CRT alignment when compared to the conventional casing running method. This paper highlights the advancements achieved through automation and optimized processes in integrated casing running, improving performance and increased safety.
