Perinatal loss, encompassing miscarriage, stillbirth, and abortion, is a complex and multifaceted experience that presents significant challenges for those affected. Despite the growing emphasis on grieving rituals and proactive involvement with affected families, the mental health treatment field has only recently begun to explore the potential benefits of expressive arts therapy in supporting individuals and families through the bereavement process. This paper reviews research suggesting that expressive arts therapy, a holistic approach that utilizes various creative modalities, can facilitate emotional expression, self-awareness, and healing in the context of perinatal loss. By providing a non-verbal means of emotional expression, fostering a sense of community, and promoting empowerment, expressive arts therapy can help navigate the complexities of perinatal bereavement, ultimately promoting healing and strengthening the parent-child bond, even in the face of tragedy.
