The main criterion for mining operations in the development of upland deposits by open-pit mining is the safety of their operation, and therefore the assessment of the stability of the geotechnical system is always relevant and requires a special approach and study. The article reveals the features of the assessment of the geotechnical system of the open pit - overburden dump of the a mountainous, consisting in studying the interaction of the geological and geomechanical environment. The factors of both the geological and geomechanical environment affecting the change in the natural stress state of the studied object are described. A scheme for evaluating a geotechnical system has been constructed, the essence of which is to study the elements of both the geological and geomechanical environment.
