This study aimed to evaluate alternation in land use and land cover (LULC) and its impact on land surface temperature (LST) in Kolhapur city and surrounding area, using Geoinformatic technology. Landsat and Resourcesat satellite data were used to study LST and LULC. ERDAS Imagine and ArcGIS software were used to pre-process the data. After pre-processing, an object-based classification approach was applied to analyze changes in LULC for the years 2001, 2011 and 2021. In 2001, built-up areas accounted for 22.88% of the region. By 2021, this proportion had increased by 17.93%, compared to 2001. During the same period, vegetation coverage decreased by 1.75% while agricultural lands also saw a reduction of 7.96%. A rapid alternation from vegetation and agricultural areas to built-up areas has been observed. As a result of this increasing urbanization in the southeast and southwest regions of study, LST values also rose by 1°C from 2001 to 2021. The highest and lowest normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values recorded were 0.66 and −0.16 respectively in 2001 and 2021. Regression analysis also indicates a significant negative relationship between NDVI and LST. The findings indicate that the reduction in agricultural land and vegetation is crucial contributor to rising LST. This study will support the Government in enhancing its ability to create robust land management plans at both local and national scales.
