This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the synonymous verbs "claim," "demand," and "require," utilizing data from the British National Corpus (BNC) and Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). By integrating corpus-based methodologies with traditional lexicographical analysis, this research investigates the semantic and grammatical variations of these verbs to understand their usage in British and American English. Utilizing advanced tools such as Wmatrix 5 for semantic analysis and NetMiner 4.0 for network analysis, the study identifies common and distinctive semantic domains, as well as the grammatical patterns associated with these verbs in different linguistic contexts. The findings indicate that while there are shared semantic fields across the corpora, significant differences in usage reflect the diverse linguistic and cultural patterns between British and American English. This study underscores the importance of contextual awareness in language acquisition and instruction, suggesting that a nuanced approach can greatly benefit ESL learners and educators. Future research could expand this analysis to include spoken language and other corpora, further exploring the colloquial uses of these verbs and their evolution over time.
