Skin is one of the barriers for organisms to resist the stimulation of the external environment. Hundreds of millions of microorganisms are implanted on the skin surface, and skin microorganisms are crucial to the maintenance of skin homeostasis. They not only repair damaged skin barriers but also improve wound healing and promote regeneration of skin appendages through specific mechanisms. Here, we highlight how the microbiome mediates skin barrier homeostasis and summarize recent advances in its role in wound healing and promoting skin accessory regeneration. Finally, we call for researchers to pay more attention to the role of commensal microorganisms in skin and its appendage regeneration.
