Medicare beneficiaries who receive medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and/or assessment or crisis services following a nonfatal drug overdose substantially reduce their odds of a subsequent fatal overdose, but disappointingly, few individuals receive any of this care. A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that only 4.1% of a cohort of Medicare fee‐for‐service patients received any MOUD in the 12 months following a nonfatal overdose.
