In cutting process, chatter vibration is a problem that deteriorates machining accuracy. In a previous study, we proposed a method that avoids chatter vibration by changing the dynamic characteristics of the machine tool without changing the machining conditions. However, the method for changing machine tool stiffness was set manually. Then, we have developed new changing method for the dynamic characteristics of machine tools during machining. In this study, the characteristics changes by a brace bar attached to a desktop machine tool is performed automatically by using a servo motor. The effectiveness of the automatic dynamic characteristics control is evaluated by the transition of the stability limit diagram through hammering tests.
