The emergence of smart cities catalyzed a fundamental shift in the role of the architect. Architects, traditionally responsible for the structural design and production of buildings, are actually at the forefront of integrating advanced technologies into the urban skyline. This narrative review explores the evolving responsibilities of architects in shaping the smart metropolis, from using information analytics and automation to optimize overall building performance to incorporating renewable energy systems and IoT-enabled infrastructure. We explore how architects are bridging the gap between physical and digital geographies and designing urban environments that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also exceptionally green, sustainable and responsive to citizens' wishes. Through case research and business insights, this assessment highlights the vital function of architects as smart city architects – visionaries who are redefining boundaries in their careers to create the cities of the future. The review concludes by identifying the key challenges and possibilities faced by architects who are constantly changing the way we stay, work and engage in the evolving environment of the smart metropolis.
