Practical school studies (SPS) are considered an important element in the competence development of student teachers. Based on the "Concept for Standards and Competencies in Practical School Studies" of the University of Potsdam a cohort of student teachers of the academic year 2015/2016 is empirically accompanied for the first time by all SPS through online questionnaire surveys. The findings presented in this article on the specific effects of the first and second teaching internship in the two subjects studied (subject didactic internships; N = 63) of the teaching-related BA program can be interpreted to the effect that both (1) the practical experiences and the exchange with mentors at the internship location, (2) the cooperation in the small groups and also (3) the university support in seminars are decisive success factors for the development of the student teacher. The experience of competence in the first teaching internship has a predominant effect on the experience of competence in the subsequently completed, second teaching internship. The results support the assumed spiral curricular interweaving of the internships and confirm the basic assumptions of the qualitative standards for the design of internships.
