Supercapacitors have emerged as promising electrochemical storage, offering advantages such as rapid charge/discharge rates and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, their practical applications have been limited due to their lower energy density, and selecting electrode materials with superior energy storage properties remains a critical factor. NiCo2S4 nanomaterials have gained significant attention due to their high theoretical specific capacitance, narrow band gap, and abundant redox reaction active sites, but challenges such as poor cyclic stability and volumetric effects associated with prolonged charging and discharging persist. This paper reviews the recent research progress on NiCo2S4 nanomaterials and comprehensively discusses various strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of NiCo2S4, including morphology control, design and development of NiCo2S4-based composite electrode nanomaterials, doping of different elements, utilization of defect engineering and phase engineering strategies, and exploration of theoretical studies. Finally, the prospects and challenges for the development of NiCo2S4 electrode nanomaterials in the field of supercapacitors are also suggested.
