Monodic Primary Source of “The Dogmas of the Virgin Mary” by Oleksandr Koshyts: Results of Musical and Theoretical Research

The purpose of the study is to determine the patterns of the internal structure of monodic hymns of the primary source of O. Koshyts's "The Dogmas of the Virgin Mary", as well as the tools of musical and theoretical analysis corresponding to their nature. Both issues are still unresolved in musicological works. Research methodology. The peculiarities of hymn organisation were identified on the basis of the systematic approach, primarily in terms of music form, guided by the laws of the Osmoglas system, in particular the tone chanting fund. The functional method was used to determine the functions of chants as elements of hymn in its formation. The comparative method was basic for identifying the peculiarities of the phenomenon of thematism in the chant environment as a leading element of its formation. The historical and stylistic method was used to substantiate the proposed tools for musical and theoretical analysis and criteria for its correctness. Scientific novelty. The first musical and theoretical analysis of the monodic primary source of O. Koshyts”s "The Dogmas of the Virgin Mary" was performed with the tools corresponding to their systemic nature. The methodology for monodic liturgical hymn analysis in terms of its formation is first proposed. Conclusions. It is established that correct scientific analysis of monodic liturgical Dogmatics is possible only on the basis of the chant fund of the musical Octoechos. It is found that chants perform all the necessary functions that are peculiar to the phenomenon of thematism, namely, structuring musical movement by means of forming structural units of the syntactic level, designing sections and parts of the form by means of specific chant grouping, establishing special combinations between them, their functional differentiation from the point of view of their compositional functions. It is determined that the basic principles for manifesting the thematic significance of chants and their functional role are the general laws of interdependent relations that are repetition and updating of material.
