Background Bongkrekic acid (BA) is a mitochondrial toxin, produced by the bacteria Burkholderia gladioli pv. cocovenenans during fermentation. Outbreaks of BA poisoning have been reported in China, Indonesia, and Mozambique, but have not been previously observed in North America.
