The escalating environmental concerns associated with synthetic plastics have intensified the search for sustainable alternatives. Among various biodegradable materials, bioplastics derived from natural polymers present a promising solution. This study explores the preparation and characterization of bioplastic using agar powder, a polysaccharide extracted from red algae. Agar-based bioplastic formulations were developed by varying concentrations of agar, glycerol as a plasticizer, and other eco-friendly additives to enhance the mechanical and physical properties. The bioplastics were synthesized through a solvent casting method, and their characteristics were analyzed using tensile strength tests, biodegradability assays, and thermal stability evaluations. The results indicated that the optimal formulation achieved a significant improvement in flexibility and strength compared to traditional agar bioplastics. Furthermore, the bioplastics exhibited excellent biodegradability in soil burial tests, highlighting their environmental benefits. This study not only contributes to the growing body of knowledge on biodegradable materials but also underscores the potential of agar-derived bioplastics in reducing the reliance on conventional plastics, thereby supporting sustainable development goals.
