Lactate administration post-exercise promotes triglyceride content loss in skeletal muscles (SKMs) and reduced body weight. Lactate enhances fatty acid oxidation in the SKMs of high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice due to enhanced mitochondrial oxygen consumption. In addition, lactate restores the malate-aspartate shuttle, which is reduced by a HFD, and activates the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) cycle in SKMs. Interestingly, supraphysiological lactate facilitates uncoupling protein-3 expression through NADH/NAD + , which is enhanced under high-fat levels in SKMs.
