Background The home learning environment (HLE) is central to children's development. Activities in the HLE are assumed to mediate the effects of distal factors such as family socio-economic status (SES) and parental beliefs and attitudes on children's development. However, little is known about the science-specific HLE and the relationship between different parent-child science activities and elementary school children's science learning.
