Abstract:: It is known that the cause of most diseases is oxidative stress. From the past, up to today, plants have had important roles in the prevention and treatment of diseases due to high amounts of bioactive and antioxidative contents. Over the last centuries, Capparis spinosa, a plant species belonging to the genus Capparicedea, has been widely examined for several therapeutic effects, including anti-microbial, anti-cancer activity, as well as anti-diabetic, renal, and hepatoprotective properties in vitro and in vivo and some clinical trials. The presence of high amounts of active components such as phenols and flavonoids in Capparis spinosa has turned it into a potential valuable therapeutical agent since the trend in natural products and phytotherapy has witnessed an increasing momentum in the realm of pharmaceutical sciences. Although this plant has an intensive history in traditional medicine, more studies are required to gain in-depth comprehensive knowledge of its potential clinical effects and mechanisms. This review aims to summarize the protective and therapeutic activities of Capparis spinosa and the possible prospects of its biomedical applications. New technology methods like nanoparticles are recommended.
