The purpose of the research is to study key moments in the evolution of the episode of weighing souls at the Last Judgment in Western European medieval art. The article examines works of art on this subject in the early Middle Ages, in the Romanesque and Gothic styles, as well as in the works of artists of the Northern and Southern Renaissance. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time a classification of different types of images of the episode of weighing souls is made. As a result, the main stages of the evolution of this episode in Western European art and changes in its perception during the Middle Ages are shown.
