Introduction: the article examines the physical and psychological impact on participants in the criminal process by criminals and their environment, with the aim of obstructing the administration of justice and the conduct of a preliminary investigation. Materials and Methods: the study employed a dialectical methodology. Furthermore, the author employed analytical, survey, and statistical methods. The study was based on certain provisions of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, criminal, criminal procedure, and investigation legislation. The theoretical and methodological basis for the research was formed by the works of criminalistics, criminal procedure, and investigation theory. The results of this study indicate that the security of participants in the criminal procedure can be defined as a complex, multistep organisational and functional activity of the competent central authorities. This activity is aimed at generating and sustaining security for the participants using criminal, criminal procedure, investigative, and criminalistics knowledge and recommendations. Discussion and Conclusions: the study of various approaches to the issue led the author to the conclusion that there is no unified and solid concept of the safety of those taking part in the criminal proceedings. Such a concept can be developed through the results of interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research.
