Laboratory analysis demonstrates significant antioxidant activity and phenolic content in Cassia siamea leaves, highlighting therapeutic potential.
Cassia siamea L. (syn.Senna siamea L.) is a medium sized angiosperm. It is classified in the Fabaceae family.Medical professionals have used it to treat urticaria, liver issues, rhinitis, and appetite loss brought on by digestive issues.Furthermore, it is reported to have purgative and laxative properties. The current study's goal is to investigate proximate composition, phytochemicals and antioxidant activity of leaves of C. siamea.Proximate composition was estimated as w/w.Phytochemicals were analysed from methanol, aqueous and ethyl acetate extracts of leaves.Various phytochemicals such as reducing sugar, total sugar, non-reducing sugar, total phenolics and total flavonoids were present in significant amounts.Total antioxidant activity evaluated by phomolybdenum assay and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity.
