This research investigates the dynamic response and failure behavior of X80 steel pipelines under external contact explosion loads, a critical concern for oil and gas pipeline safety due to increased terrorist activities. The dynamic response characteristics are critically analyzed under ten different conditions of explosive charges, providing a detailed evaluation of the damage mechanisms, including denting and perforation. The study finds that wall thickness significantly influences the blast resistance of pipelines, with thicker walls offering better protection against explosive loads. This is substantiated by comparing destruction scenarios and morphologies of perforation holes between X80 and X70 steel pipelines. The paper concludes that increasing wall thickness markedly improves pipeline resilience against explosive destruction, contributing valuable guidelines for designing more robust and safer pipeline infrastructures.
