Introduction Physicians worldwide face high pressure, which often begins during their medical education. This study investigates the evolution of burnout risk and the relationship between job demands, resources, burnout risk and work engagement, aiming to provide guidance for interventions that can enhance their mental well-being. Methods A longitudinal design was employed, utilizing an annual online questionnaire over three years across five Belgian universities. The study included four cohorts: bachelor students (n=361), master students (n=293), general practitioner trainees (n=108), and specialist trainees (n=135). Approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee UZ/ KU Leuven (S64150). Results The findings unveiled a statistically significant increase in emotional exhaustion, a primary dimension of burnout, as participants progressed from their first year bachelor (M=2.57, SD=1.20) to specialist trainees (M=3.14, SD=1.36) (t(93) =-2.97, p<0.01). Furthermore, the results indicated a positive correlation between emotional exhaustion and an unhealthy work-life balance (r=0.75, p<0.01), as well as with quantitative workload (r=0.50, p<0.01). Additional statistical analysis, such as mixed effects models, are currently being conducted, and the results will be presented at the conference. Discussion These findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge on burnout, demonstrating a decline in mental well-being throughout medical education. In addition, the study identifies a healthy work-life balance and managing quantitative work load as crucial areas for improvement. Conclusion This study underscores the importance of prioritising mental well-being, starting from medical education. Future interventions should address these factors to promote and preserve the mental well-being of medical students and residents.
