Ss22-01 Implications of the Recognition of a Safe and Healthy Working Environment as Fundamental Principle and Right at Work for Ilo Member States

Abstract Introduction At its 110th Session (June 2022), the International Labour Conference decided to amend paragraph 2 of the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (1998) to include “a safe and healthy working environment” as a fundamental principle and right at work (FPRW), recognizing the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (no. 155) and the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187) as fundamental conventions. As a result of these decisions, all ILO Members have an obligation, regardless of whether they have ratified these Conventions, to promote, respect and realize this principle and right. Materials and Methods The inclusion of a safe and healthy working environment as FPRW represents a unique opportunity to reinforce the ILO’s activity in promoting the ratification and implementation not only of the new fundamental conventions, but also other OSH conventions, considering the interdependent relationship between them. Results With the aim to support ILO constituents in promoting and realizing a safe and healthy working environment, the ILO is developing a new Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health, that will guide ILO work in the field of OSH. Conclusions The presentation will describe the implications of the recognition of a safe and healthy working environment as fundamental principle and right at work for the ILO constituents. It will also provide an overview of how the ILO will support them in promoting, respecting and realizing this fundamental right.
