The expression of anandamide binding sites in the urinary bladder, namely the cannabinoid receptors and members of the transient receptor potential is described. The role of anandamide in the modulation of micturition in health and pathological conditions is reviewed. As chronic bladder pain may be associated with the activation of the cannabinoid-TRP system, the putative role of anandamide in the triggering of bladder nociceptive pathways is described. The modulation of urinary bladder enzymes involved in the metabolic pathway of anandamide is already under clinical investigation. Therefore therapeutic opportunity will be reviewed, along with the interaction of anandamide with other eicosanoids.
