Introduction Many tools and instruments are accessible for evaluating the outcomes of Shared Decision Making (SDM) interventions. However, within the realm of SDM implementation, there is a lack of tools to access the progress of SDM implementation. This study focuses on the development of a maturity framework, named SDM:KOMPASS, designed to assist hospital settings in evaluating their progress and setting goals for SDM implementation. Methods A six-step development process was performed, including testing the tool’s face and content validity. Insights were gathered through observations, individual and focus group interviews. A 10-item quantitative survey assessed participants' immediate attitudes toward the tool. Employing a bottom-up strategy the tool was subjected to a final user experience test. Results Purposefully sampled participants (N=20), including healthcare professionals and patients, contributed in interviews with diverse perspectives regarding 1) The tool’s readability and clarity, 2) the construct’s domains and content, and 3) the tool’s perceived usability. Feedback from the participants showed the tool were deemed understandable and useful. The user experience test confirmed this, leading to the final version (figure 1). Discussion SDM:KOMPASS serves as a self-assessment tool for healthcare professionals and managers in hospital departments, and can possibly drive sustainable change fostering a more SDM-oriented behavioral environment. Conclusion(s) Professionals involved in strategic implementation within hospital departments found the tool valuable and practical. The six-step development process highlighted the tool’s potential to improve manageability, goal setting, and focus in SDM implementation. While promising and useful, the tool requires careful attention due to its comprehensive nature.
