Commutation failure is one of the most common faults in Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) systems. As voltage levels and transmission capacities continue to increase, the degree of coupling between AC and DC intensifies, making the commutation failure problem more complex. Identifying the source of failure is of significant practical value in enhancing the operational reliability of UHVDC systems. A comprehensive diagnosis method for UHVDC commutation failure considering the impact of AC/DC coupling is proposed in the article. Firstly, the fault types are classified based on the commutation failure ledger within the converter station. The variation in AC voltage is utilized to trace the fault layers and types of AC grid faults under interlayer coupling. The ratio of the integrated change in bipolar DC current is employed to select fault poles under intrapolar coupling. Building upon the analysis of the interaction between AC and DC coupling, a comprehensive diagnostic method for commutation failures is presented. Finally, the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method and criterion are verified through calculation and analysis of on-site recording data, providing a practical method for locating the source of commutation failure faults.
