Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used with various indications in patients with acute cardiopulmonary failure. The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Registry recently announced that there have been more than 100,000 survivors worldwide. It is expected that understanding previous experiences with ECMO, such as its initial development and subsequent global dissemination, will help researchers find future directions to explore.
