Objectives: Inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a naturally occurring metalloid which is leading to global drinking water contaminant. Chronic exposure to iAs in pregnancy is associated with adverse effects on maternal child health leading to neurological disorders. The dietary omega-3 fatty acid like docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is known to modulate the neurotransmitters and improves cognition. Methods: In the present study, we fed the dams with corn oil+ tap water (control), corn oil+ sodium arsenite (SA) in water, corn oil+ SA + triglyceride DHA (TG DHA), corn oil+ SA + lysophosphatidyl choline DHA (LPC DHA), in their gestation period. Results: We analyzed brain DHA levels in pups. The DHA levels in the female pups were showed16.41%, 12.03%, 16.31%, and 28.61%, in control, corn oil+ SA, corn oil+ SA + TG DHA, corn oil+ SA + LPC DHA, respectively. The DHA levels in the male pups were showed16.54%, 12.12%, 15.97%, and 29.6%, in control, corn oil+ SA, corn oil+ SA + TG DHA, corn oil+ SA + LPC DHA, respectively. Whereas in arachidonic acid (20:4) levels in female pups were 13.1%, 15.8%, 11.85%, 7.12%, in control, corn oil+ SA, corn oil+ SA + TG DHA, corn oil+ SA + LPC DHA, respectively. 20:4 levels in male pups were 13.6%, 15.5%, 11.9%, 6.95%, in control, corn oil+ SA, corn oil+ SA + TG DHA, corn oil+ SA + LPC DHA, respectively. Conclusions: The results were concluded that feeding LPC DHA to dams significantly increased the brain DHA levels in both males and females. Furthermore, the proinflammatory nature caused by arsenic exposure was beneficially down regulated by lowering the 20:4 levels. Funding Sources: VA Grant.
