Comprehensive analysis of patent search techniques in chemical compounds using SureChEMBL and Patentscope, highlighting database limitations.
The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive guide to conducting patent searches concerning chemical compounds using freely available databases. The following three patent databases will be considered: SureChEMBL, Patentscope, and Espacenet. A structure search can only be conducted using SureChEMBL and Patentscope, as Espacenet does not offer this functionality. Accordingly, with regard to the latter database, it is only possible to utilize classification symbols and keywords to execute a compound search. To illustrate the practical application of patent compound search, the 2-(2,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-1,3-propanediol (serinol pyrrole) will be used as a case study.
