Corrosion resistance of an orthodontic wire made of Ni-Ti alloy immersed in artificial saliva in the absence and presence of Copper Barrel brandy has been investigated by polarization study and AC impedance spectra. It is observed that corrosion resistance of Ni-Ti alloy immersed in artificial saliva in the presence of Copper Barrel brandy decreases.Hence it is concluded that people clipped with orthodontic wire made of Ni-Ti alloy should avoid taking Copper Barrel brandy orally. When Ni-Ti alloy is immersed in artificial saliva in the presence of Copper Barrel brandy, linear polarization resistance value decreases from 25.42×10 8 Ohm•cm 2 to 6.83×10 6 Ohm•cm 2 ; corrosion current increases from 2.00×10 -11 A/cm 2 to 6.26×10 -9 A/cm 2 ; charge transfer resistance value decreases from 51.16×10 7 Ohm•cm 2 to 7.84×10 5 Ohm•cm 2 ; impedance value decreases from 8.279 to 6.139; double layer capacitance increases from 0.997×10 -14 F/cm 2 to 651×10 -14 F/cm 2 , and phase angle decreases from 78.84° to 45.77°.The findings of this study may find application in dentistry. The surface morphology has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM).It is found that in the presence of Copper Barrel brandy, the roughness of the alloy increases due to corrosion process. The AFM parameters RMS (Sq), roughness (nm), average (Sa) roughness (nm) and maximum peak-to-valley height (Sy) (nm) have been derived. These parameters are high when orthodontic wire made of Ni-Ti alloy is immersed in artificial saliva in the presence of Copper Barrel brandy. The shift in corrosion potential is within 50 mV indicating that Copper Barrel brandy functions as mixed type of additive. That is, it accelerates both the anodic and cathodic process of corrosion.
