This study analyses the economic consequences of expelling the Moriscos from the lands pertaining to Castellnovo, especially repercussions linked to repopulation and changes in the seigniory finances. The royal edict regarding the Morisco population led to a drastic decline in demographics and income for the baronies. However, the monarchy offered compensatory measures for the noble families that were supposedly most affected, including the Borja-Llansol de Romaní estate. These properties were heavily indebted and generated low annual income, so it could reasonably be expected that the expulsion would have dealt the finishing blow. Nothing could have been further from reality. Examination of procedural documentation, the carta puebla granted in 1611, demographic fluctuations and the compensations awarded by the Crown shows that Castellnovo began to be more profitable for its lords after – and thanks to – the Morisco exodus.
