Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors are a new innovative class of glucose-lowering drugs. The drugs belong to the group of incretin mimetics, prolonging the action of their own incretins. Since 2007, the list of proposed dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors has expanded significantly and significant experience in their use has accumulated. Despite the differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, all drugs in this group are characterized by a sufficient hypoglycemic effect, no effect on body weight, a low risk of developing hypoglycemic conditions, and good tolerability. Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors are indicated for older patients.
