Introduction: People with T2D treated with oral insulin-secretagogues are at risk for acute diabetes events (ADEs), including DKA and hypoglycemia. This study investigates the change in hospitalization rates for ADEs following initiation of FreeStyle Libre® system (FSL), in people with T2D in France, treated with oral insulin-secretagogue drugs without insulin. Methods: Retrospective study of the French national SNDS claims database identified people with T2D treated with insulin-secretagogues without insulin and a FSL initiation date between 01/Aug/2017 to 31/Dec/2018. Data for the 12 months before and after FSL initiation were included. Hospitalizations were identified using ICD-10 codes for: DKA; hyperglycemia; hypoglycemic events; comas. Results: 4,962 people with T2D on oral insulin-secretagogue drugs initiated FSL during the selection period. Of these, 8.7% had at least one hospitalization for any ADE in the year before FSL initiation, compared to 2.4% in the year after initiation (Fig 1), a reduction of 72%. The reduction in ADEs was driven by -81% fewer admissions for DKA or hyperglycemia. Conclusions: This study suggests that use of the FSL system is associated with reduced hospital admissions for ADEs in people with T2D in France, treated with oral insulin-secretagogue drugs without insulin.
