The COVID-19 pandemic stimulated considerable research and innovation in respirator and mask design, use and performance (fit) testing. For example, innovations to improve fit, such as mask fitters and face seal additions, proved effective but were often not evaluated for comfort or performance over time. The use of 3D facial scans and 3D printers allowed for the creation of personalized respirators, but product regulation and certification were generally not considered. Innovations for improving the fit of negative pressure respirators in the presence of facial hair showed some promise, but further assessment is needed. These and other new approaches will be described and discussed in terms of future applications, research needs, and regulatory challenges.
