Born with prospects succession to the Brooke dynasty in Sarawak, Anthony Brooke was of rulership and thrice demoted from the royal estate, a rise and fall that took place over three years of direct involvement in the affairs of Sarawak. A falling out with his uncle, Rajah Charles Vyner Brooke (r. 1917–41, 1946) before the war and a clash over the post-war cession of Sarawak to the British Crown sealed Anthony's fate. The present reviews the end of Brooke rule in Sarawak and the tumultuous Sarawak career of Anthony Brooke, whose hubris and failure to adapt to changing circumstances brought about his fall from grace.
