Despite injuries that left him a quadriplegic, Father William E. Atkinson, O.S.A. (1946–2006), undertook with assistance priestly ministry as an Augustinian. Known as “Father Bill,” Atkinson was dependent on his Augustinian community, his family, and individuals who believed that his physical limitations were no match for his spirit or abilities. This essay, researched and written by members of the historical commission for Atkinson’s beatification and canonization, focuses on the particular problems presented in the effort to ordain a quadriplegic as well as his integration into religious life. It concludes with some thoughts on how his case is important for the growing field of disability studies.
