In this study, the onset, withdraw, and the breaks of summer monsoon rainfall in the Central region were analyzed based on observed rainfall data from 12 stations and reanalysis data from National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP/NCAR) during the period 1980-2020.The break periods were identified by comparing the anomalous rainfall and its standard deviations at each station.A frequency distribution chart of break days was used to analyze the characteristics of the break periods. The composite technique was also applied to identify large-scale features related to the break periods. The results showed that the break periods mainly lasted from 5 to 7 days, and break periods lasting over 7 days were almost negligible. The number of break days increased gradually from the beginning of the rainy season, peaking around the middle of the rainy season for stations in the western part of the Central Highlands region and in the end of the rainy season for stations in the eastern part. The study results also indicated that the rainy season break periods in the Central Highlands region are associated with the development of anomalous anticyclonic vortexes in the Central Highlands and Southern regions.
