This study provides a method to make the relationship between rain rate and the specific differential phase (Kdp) parameter of the dual-polarization weather radar system without disdrometers. It compares the effectiveness of quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) using Kdp, KRE, and Marshall-Palmer methods for some heavy rainfall cases in Hanoi area. The results show that the empirical formula R(Kdp) = 31.9Kdp 0.81 is given to apply specifically to Hanoi area without disdrometers, and using an empirical formula to estimate the amount of rain R(Kdp) established is less effective in heavy rainfall cases even when adjusting coefficient and coefficient b for each weather characteristic. The KRE method simulates and captures the heavy rainfall cases study relatively well and gives the best results among three QPE methods in this study.
