A gain enhancement method for a planar square dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is investigated using a loading metal. It deploys a conventional aperture-coupled square DRA. By loading the top face of the DRA with a pair of shorting metallic patches, two different resonance modes can be excited and combined to enhance the gain. To further increase the gain, additional shorting patches are introduced near the four corners of the top DRA surface. A gain enhancement of 2.6 dB was simulated. To validate the idea, a prototype was fabricated and measured. A unidirectional radiation pattern was measured, with a realized gain of 9.9 dBi and a sidelobe level of -10 dB.
