In India, bituminous surfaces dominate road construction due to their adaptability. However, challenges like rutting, pushing, bleeding, cracking, and potholing arise due to increased traffic loads and temperature variations caused by climate change. Bitumen, the primary binder in flexible pavements, becomes soft in summer and brittle in winter, exacerbating these issues. Moreover, the rapid pace of roadway construction in India necessitates a substantial demand for construction materials that are both eco-friendly and cost-effective. Studies have shown that the properties of bitumen and bituminous mixes can be enhanced through the addition of specific additives, leading to the concept of "modified bitumen." This study aims to utilize modified bitumen incorporating plastic waste for road construction, offering a sustainable and economical solution. The research explores literature and methodologies concerning the use of modifiers in bitumen to facilitate highway construction in an eco-friendly and cost-effective manner. The modified bitumen mixture exhibits improved binding properties, stability, density, and resistance to water, enhancing its suitability for road construction.
