The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a transformative technology that connects computing devices, both physical and virtual, to the internet, allowing for the remote control and monitoring of these devices. This technology has vast potential for the development of a wide array of applications, including e-governance, environmental monitoring, military uses, infrastructure management, industrial operations, energy management, healthcare systems, home automation, and transportation systems. This paper provides a concise review of existing frameworks for IoT application development and discusses methodologies for creating smart home applications using these frameworks. Additionally, it introduces a new, generic framework designed specifically for the development of IoT-based smart home systems. The proposed generic framework includes several key modules: Auto-Configuration and Management, Communication Protocol, Auto-Monitoring and Control, and Objects Access Control. Detailed descriptions of the architecture and functionalities of these modules are presented, showcasing how they integrate to enhance the usability and efficiency of smart homes, thereby improving the comfort and convenience for residents.
