The purpose of the article is to substantiate the feasibility of using the project method to develop competencies in the study of professional disciplines in higher educational institutions. The article identifies the goals, objectives, principles of the project method, and its features, including advantages and disadvantages, and provides a generally accepted classifi cation of projects, reasons for their use, and expected results. The methodology for applying the project method in the form of individual research projects in the general professional disciplines “Marketing” and “Theoretical Foundations of Commodity Science” is presented. It has been established that the use of the project method in practical classes of professional disciplines in a higher educational institution makes it possible to intensify the creative activity of students and ensures the individualization of training, students’ awareness of the professional significance of knowledge, and the formation of professional competencies.
