A study of the genus Rhynchospora Vahl (Cyperaceae) based on its collections in various Indian herbaria and literature has revealed the presence of eight species and two varieties in India. These have been suitably distinguished, described and illustrated, with notes on taxonomy, ecology and distribution. Two new varietal combinations have been prosposed under R. rugosa (Vahl) Gale.
