A primer for second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy as a technique for interfacial analyses is presented in this paper. It includes a systematic discussion of the accompanying theoretical work involved in signal generation, which may serve as an introductory guide for students and researchers. Theoretical derivations of SHG intensity are also presented in this work, to elucidate introduced concepts. The very first working SHG microscope built in the Philippines, is also presented in this paper. In addition, interesting SHG studies on various interfaces through the years are described, including works on semiconductors, nanomaterials, lipid membranes, and biological samples.
