The synchronous generator model forms the foundation for virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control. However, the impact of different-order model structures as VSG controls on system stability is still unclear. This paper investigates the influence of field winding transient in VSG control on the low-frequency stability of the system. The study reveals that, compared to the commonly used second-order VSG control, the VSG control with field winding transient introduces a negative virtual resistor, thereby reducing system damping, which deteriorates system stability. Experimental tests are presented to validate the theoretical analysis.
