The ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission system generally based on the line commutated converter (LCC) technology, since it has the advantages of large transmission capacity, high reliability and good economy. The operation of LCC relays on the stability AC voltage and needs a large number of reactive power compensation devices. However, the sending end of UHVDC is usually connected to a weak AC grid, and the converter blocking or commutation failure may cause serious transient overvoltage of the sending AC grid. In this paper, an energy dissipating device used in the AC grid is proposed, which utilizes the nonlinear impedance characteristics of lightning arresters to absorb the instantaneous power surplus. The proposed method can effectively reduce the overvoltage caused by DC power interruption in the rectifier side, and the theoretic analysis is verified in the PSCAD simulation model of the UHVDC system.
