In order to optimally place phasor measurement units (PMUs) to support the line loss diagnosis in active distribution networks, an optimal placement method is proposed, which considers the requirements of harmonic analysis and diagnosis of line loss. Firstly, two indicators are proposed to measure the requirements of harmonic loss analysis and line loss diagnosis. Secondly, on the premise that the power system is completely observable, with the minimum number of PMUs as the goal, multiple preliminary placement schemes are obtained by using the binary particle swarm optimization algorithm. Finally, on the basis of multiple preliminary placement schemes, optimal placement scheme is obtained by considering the above two indicators. The proposed method is verified on the IEEE-33 node test system. The method provides quantitative data support for line loss diagnosis, thus proving its effectiveness.
