An advantage of the step electro-acoustic (SEA) method over the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method is that the shape of the impulse response can be unipolar. In this paper, we attempt to apply the SEA method to the space charge measurement for a 6.6 kV power cable. A clear impulse response close to the Gaussian function is observed by using a very long pulse voltage and a transducer as a high-pass filter. The spatial resolution of the SEA signal without deconvolution is comparable to that of the PEA signal with deconvolution.
