Electric installations for modern applications such as renewable energy generation and battery storage systems require flexible assets that can be used in many ways. Such flexibility may require considerable number of energizations and disconnections; therefore, these transformers experience much more frequent switching than the transformers installed in conventional industrial applications. This paper assesses the benefits of disconnecting transformers, both dry-type and liquid-filled, whether aiming to save its no-load losses, perform maintenance routine or clearing faults along the whole facility's circuit. This paper also highlights the risks of performing such maneuvers using vacuum circuit breakers without having adequate protection against switching transients. Finally, a recognized solution (called TVP) is proposed to mitigate the risk of transformer failure due to switching transients and its features are compared with other available solutions.
